Between Stillness and Story
A practice shaped by nuance and emotional precision.
If you’ve ever paused at a flicker of light, or a stranger’s gesture —
You’re in the right place.
I’m Sarah Choo Jing,
a multidisciplinary artist exploring solitude, spectatorship, and the uncanny through photography, video and installation.
Rooted in an interdisciplinary lens, my practice navigates contemporary urban life through still and moving images. I stage moments that feel both private and observed — threading narratives of longing, ritual and voyeurism.
I hold an MFA from the Slade School of Art, London (2015) and have been based in Singapore since. My work has been exhibited internationally at institutions including the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, Turku Art Museum in Helsinki, Busan Museum of Art, National Museum of Singapore, and presented at art fairs including ArtParis at the Grand Palais, Photo London, and the START Art Fair at the Saatchi Gallery.
My work has been recognised with the 3D Interactive Award from The Lumen Prize for Art and Technology (2021), Gold at the PX3 Prix de la Photographie, Paris (2019), Perspectives 40 under 40 (2017), and First Place at the Moscow International Foto Awards (2015). Earlier awards include the ICON De Martell Cordon Bleu Photography Award and the Kwek Leng Joo Prize of Excellence in Still Photography.
I was also shortlisted for the Audemars Piguet Art Commission for Art Basel 2020, where I presented my practice in Le Brassus, Switzerland. My works are collected by both private individuals and institutions including the Singapore Art Museum, National Museum of Singapore, Chrysler Museum of Art, and The Arts Club Permanent Collection in London.
Whether I’m creating a cinematic tableau, mentoring emerging artists, or collaborating with cultural and commercial partners — my practice remains devoted to framing the overlooked, and re-seeing the ordinary.
What it is like to step behind the frame.
This studio is an open, intentional space.
Working with me is quiet but precise; thoughtful and clear. We begin with dialogue. We build trust in layers.
Here is how it typically unfolds:
-
Reach out through the studio contact form or by direct invitation. Share what you’re seeking — whether it’s a commissioned work, curatorial interest, or creative dialogue.
-
Every collaboration begins with listening. Together, we shape the conceptual framework, outline deliverables, and clarify format, timelines, and tone.
-
After a process rooted in depth, clarity, and intention, your project or artwork is delivered. What you receive will feel both precise and expansive, layered in meaning, and crafted to resonate.
A Glimpse Behind the Scenes
Behind the stillness, a storm quietly passes.
There are days when I edit until 4am,
convinced I’m on the brink of something profound.
And then, there are weeks where I can’t stand to look at my own work.
I’ve come to accept this rhythm —
the sharp ascent, the quiet undoing.
It mirrors the work.
Cinematic, emotionally precise, but never emotionally neat.
I make sense of the world through these oscillations —
by capturing moments suspended between performance and collapse.
The irony?
People often describe my work as serene.
But serenity, for me, is a decision made through chaos.
What I Value
Clarity born from complexity
Rituals that slow the noise
Collaboration that respects quiet
Art that can sit with discomfort
Emotional honesty, even when it flickers
A Few Things That Make Me, Me
I work in bursts — intensity followed by retreat.
I collect audio clips of empty rooms.
My studio playlist swings from Arvo Pärt to early 2000s club anthems.
I believe beauty and melancholy often share the same breath.
